Newbury is a quaint town nestled in the heart of West Berkshire. The top class racecourse or Highclere Castle, home of Downton Abbey, are a must-visit, but there’s plenty more to explore in and around town. Shaw House is a fantastic Elizabethan manor house dating back to 1581, often described as a hidden gem, while Donnington Castle offers 14th-century ruins near the River Lambourn. While by the river, walk down a country lane to Watermill Theatre, a lovely little performance venue in a converted mill, where you can enjoy amazing productions. Or take an 11-minute drive from our serviced apartments to the Sandham Memorial Chapel, a little-known treasure of a building which houses the magnificent paintings of visionary artist Stanley Spencer. Not far from Newbury, you’ll also find beautiful walking and cycling trails, making a stay perfect for families to have a day out and enjoy the scenery. The North Wessex Downs, one of Britain’s most beautiful landscapes, offer remote rolling downland and picture postcard villages to explore.

Newbury may not come straight to mind when you think Cornish pasties but The Baker’s Lounge Bar specialises in these delicious handmade treats. In the heart of town, Corn Exchange houses a 400-seat theatre and an independent cinema in a Grade II listed 19th-century building. It’s a great place to enjoy an evening’s performance before you head to the popular kitchen and bar for a drink. You’re never far from a pub at Newbury, where you can enjoy a beer, wine or cocktail. Pull up a stool at the Gin Yard at The Catherine Wheel, where a vast array of gins can be enjoyed in a beautiful courtyard garden. For a “good old-fashioned drinking pub”, head to The Cooper’s Arms, which also occasionally has live music. Whatever the weather, the beer garden at The Dolphin is a great place to meet friends – enjoy the sunshine or snag one of the heated huts and pergolas if you need to keep cosy.
